City Council will hear ‘recreational’ cannabis ban

 

The Fresno City Council will hold a public hearing on a draft ordinance to prohibit adult-use or “recreational” cannabis businesses. The ordinance was prepared after a 4-3 council vote to ban dispensaries and other business types made legal by Proposition 64, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act. City set to exempt 6 plants from cultivation ban

 

UPDATE: On June 22, the City Council voted to a) modify its existing cultivation ban, and b) draft a new ban on adult-use cannabis businesses. The cultivation ordinance came up for final approval July 20 but failed to pass by majority vote. It will come up for another vote as consent agenda item 1-M. Faced with opposition from Prop. 215 patients, the Fresno City Council voted down a cannabis cultivation ordinance to allow limited indoor growing. Thursday’s 4-3 vote represented an about-face from the March 26 hearing, where the council voted 5-2 to approve the ordinance. The measure would have allowed patients to grow up to four plants indoors after securing a “special permit” from the city. Under Fresno Ordinance 2014-20, all growing is prohibited. The Fresno City Council passed its new cannabis growing ban on Thursday, closely following the lead of Fresno County. Both ordinances feature heavy fines of $1,000 per plant, which county supervisors imposed for the first time Tuesday. Council Member Clint Olivier cast the sole “no” vote, as he did at the first reading on March 20.
