Police arrested Fresno mayoral candidate and medical-marijuana advocate Rick Morse on Sunday for allegedly pepper-spraying a homeless man in his neighborhood, Marc Benjamin of the Fresno Bee reports.
Police said Morse and the man have been involved in an ongoing confrontation.
The homeless man had taken up residence in a vacant lot across the street from Morse’s home near the corner of Palm and Olive avenues. About 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Morse began throwing away the man’s possessions, police said.
“Mr. Morse was throwing [the man's] property into a garbage can in the vacant lot,” police Lt. Don Gross said.
According to police reports, when the man picked up a plastic pipe to defend himself, Morse pepper-sprayed him.
Morse called The Bee last week and said he and his neighbors were having problems with a homeless man in his neighborhood. He said he planned to take some kind of action.
Morse was booked into Fresno County Jail and released Sunday after eight hours behind bars.
