In response to a total growing ban passed by Fresno County supervisors, local cannabis activists are launching a petition drive for a referendum that would temporarily block the new law from being enforced. The first petitions are expected to hit the streets this week, and volunteer petition circulators are needed.

The deadline to file referendum petitions is Feb. 5, 2013.

The Fresno County cannabis ban was passed Jan. 7 on a unanimous board vote, with a belated stamp of approval issued Jan. 9 by the Fresno County Planning Commission. Ordinance 14-001 takes effect Feb. 6, with new penalties that include heavy fines that start at $1,000 per plant. Violations also can be charged as a criminal misdemeanor, and sheriff’s deputies can seek inspection warrants if you don’t agree to let them onto your property during compliance checks.
