MODESTO – The husband and father of a former Stanislaus County sheriff’s detective appeared in court Friday for the first time since the men were arrested last month on suspicion of conspiring to forcibly enter homes and cultivating marijuana. A filed criminal complaint alleges Kari Abbey’s husband, Bennie Taylor, and her father, James Abbey, unlawfully entered rental homes owned by Abbey or her family. Local law enforcement announced Monday that it will be working with federal agencies to crack down on large-scale medical marijuana grows, primarily on agricultural land. “We’re going to start (pushing for) federal charges against people because of the state’s reluctance to file cases,” said Tom MacKenzie, spokesman for the Merced County Sheriff’s Department. “We’re notifying people that there’s going to be law enforcement action.” The Sheriff’s Department is sending out letters and emails telling medical [read more …]

A third person from the central San Joaquin Valley is under arrest in Virginia for allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana into that state. David Ray Flowers, 38, of Fresno was arrested with Frederick Michael Sayles, 34, of Selma and Gabriel Hernandez Sepeda II, 38, of Fresno. Sayles is a Selma police officer and Sepeda is a former Selma police officer, according to the Selma Police Department. Sayles is on administrative leave, Lewis Griswold reports in [read more …]
