The Fresno City Council on Thursday OK’d an immediate 45-day ban on growing medical marijuana outdoors.
The vote was 6-1, with Council Member Clint Olivier opposed, Marc Benjamin reports in the Fresno Bee. He said his opposition was procedural — he doesn’t believe that emergency ordinances give enough time for everyone to have enough say.
Police asked for the ban because of a rise in calls from residents who have conflicts with growers who are neighbors — 198 already this year, compared with 52 last year.
Deputy Police Chief Keith Foster said the temporary ban gives police time to craft a permanent ordinance. He said the new ordinance could restrict outdoor planting to a separate structure that is locked, has a burglar alarm and is well-ventilated. He said police will examine ordinances from other communities.
